Homemade barbecue sauce offers a rich, tangy, and slightly sweet taste that enhances any grilled dish, with simple ingredients and a quick prep time.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 20 servings (approximately 2 tablespoons per serving)

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups tomato ketchup

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

3/4 cup packed light brown sugar

2 Tbsp yellow mustard

1 Tbsp paprika (or to taste)

2 tsp onion powder

1 tsp ground black pepper (or to taste)

4 garlic cloves, minced

1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine all the ingredients: ketchup, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, paprika, onion powder, black pepper, garlic, and water.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer the sauce uncovered for about 30 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  4. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed by adding more sugar, salt, or spices.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the BBQ sauce to cool to room temperature.
  6. Once cooled, transfer the sauce into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  7. For the best flavor, let the sauce rest in the refrigerator for about 1 hour before using.

Notes

  • For a spicier BBQ sauce, add 1-2 teaspoons of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • For a smoky BBQ flavor, include 1-2 teaspoons of smoked paprika.
  • For a sweeter BBQ sauce, increase the brown sugar or add honey to taste.
  • For a vegan version, substitute Worcestershire sauce with a vegan-friendly alternative.
  • For a sugar-free version, use stevia or monk fruit as a sugar substitute.
  • BBQ sauce can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
  • To reheat, microwave in short intervals or warm on the stove over low heat.
  • If you want a thicker sauce, simmer longer or add a tablespoon of tomato paste.
