  • Total Time: 55–60 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 cup long-grain white rice (uncooked)

1 packet French onion soup mix

2 1/2 cups beef broth

1 cup sour cream

2 cups shredded cheese (mozzarella, Swiss, or preferred blend)

1 1/2 cups French-fried onions

2 tbsp butter

1 tsp garlic powder

Salt, to taste

Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat and season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. In a large bowl, combine uncooked rice, French onion soup mix, and beef broth. Stir thoroughly.
  4. Add the cooked ground beef and sour cream to the rice mixture; mix until well combined.
  5. Transfer mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading evenly. Top with shredded cheese.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Sprinkle French-fried onions on top and bake for another 5 minutes until golden and crispy.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Long-grain white rice works best for texture and flavor absorption.
  • For a lighter version, omit sour cream or replace with Greek yogurt.
  • Add vegetables like peas, carrots, or bell peppers for extra nutrition.
  • Use gluten-free soup mix and broth for a gluten-free version.
  • Freezes well for up to 3 months when wrapped tightly.
