Chocolate chip waffles are a sweet and indulgent twist on the classic breakfast favorite, combining a fluffy interior with a crispy exterior and gooey melted chocolate chips in every bite.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 2 to 4 waffles

Ingredients

¾ cup (90g) all-purpose flour

¼ cup (30g) corn starch

1 tablespoon (12g) granulated sugar

½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

⅓ cup vegetable oil

1 large egg

¾ teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup chocolate chips

Melted butter (optional for serving)

Syrup (optional for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, corn starch, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add buttermilk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined.
  3. Let the batter rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 200°F and place a baking sheet with a cooling rack inside to keep waffles warm.
  5. After resting, gently fold in chocolate chips.
  6. Preheat waffle iron and cook batter according to iron’s instructions (about 4–6 minutes per waffle), until golden brown and steam has mostly stopped.
  7. Transfer cooked waffles to the warm oven while preparing the remaining batter.
  8. Serve warm with melted butter and syrup, if desired.

Notes

  • Resting the batter for 30 minutes improves texture and flavor.
  • Keep waffles warm and crispy in a 200°F oven while cooking remaining batter.
  • Variations: swap chocolate chips for white or dark chocolate, add nuts, or dried fruit.
  • For a vegan version, use non-dairy milk and a flax egg substitute.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for 3 days or freeze up to 3 months.
  • Reheat in a toaster or 350°F oven for crispiness.
